How to Use Claude for Business: 12 Practical Workflows

The short answer

Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic that reads, writes, analyzes and, in some apps, takes actions for you. The most useful business workflows are drafting replies in your voice, summarizing documents and meetings, analyzing spreadsheets, turning know-how into SOPs, researching with sources and building small internal tools. Give it context, a clear task, constraints and an example, and review what it produces before it reaches a customer.

Claude is a general AI assistant made by Anthropic. You can use it in a browser, on desktop and mobile apps, and inside tools a business already uses. Anthropic also offers Claude Code for software work, Claude Cowork for multi-step knowledge work on your computer, and add-ins such as Claude in Excel, Claude for Google Workspace, Claude in PowerPoint, Claude in Chrome and Claude in Slack. Which features you get depends on your plan, so check support.claude.com for the current details.

Below are twelve workflows that earn their keep in an ordinary business, roughly in the order most teams adopt them.

Writing and communication

1. Draft replies in your voice

Paste the customer’s email and two or three replies you were happy with, then ask for a draft that matches the tone. Past examples matter more than instructions like “be professional.” You still read and send it.

2. Summarize long documents

Leases, supplier agreements, policy updates and reports can be summarized into the parts that matter: dates, amounts, obligations and anything unusual. Ask it to quote the exact clause for each point so you can check. It is a reading aid, not legal advice.

3. Turn meetings into action lists

Give it a transcript or rough notes and ask for decisions, owners and deadlines. A consistent format every week makes follow-up much easier.

4. Repurpose content for marketing

One blog post can become a newsletter section, three social posts and a short video script. Give it your audience and one post that performed well as a model.

Operations and numbers

5. Analyze spreadsheets

Upload a CSV or use Claude in Excel or Google Sheets to find trends, outliers and month-over-month changes, or to explain a formula someone else wrote. Ask it to show the calculation, and spot-check totals against your own numbers.

6. Write SOPs from know-how

Describe how a task is done, out loud or in messy notes, and ask for a numbered standard operating procedure with checks and what to do when something goes wrong. Our SOP guide has a template to give it.

7. Work out quotes, prorates and pricing

Ask for the math step by step: a prorated month, a volume discount, a price for a target margin. Seeing every step makes errors easy to catch, and you can reuse the same instruction next time.

8. Prepare customer support answers

Keep your policies, pricing and FAQs in a project or shared document Claude can reference, so drafts stay consistent with what you actually offer. A person approves anything that goes out.

Research and building

9. Research with sources

With web search on, Claude can compare suppliers, summarize regulations or scan competitors, and cite where each point came from. Open the sources for anything you will act on.

10. Build small internal tools

A pricing calculator, a booking tracker or a checklist app can be built as an interactive page in a conversation. For larger tools, Claude Code works on real software projects with a developer.

11. Connect it to your own tools

Connectors let Claude search and work with services such as email, calendars, Google Drive or Slack, so it can answer questions about your actual files instead of what you paste in. Connect only what the task needs.

12. Hand off multi-step work

Claude Cowork and Claude in Chrome can carry out longer tasks, such as gathering information from several sites into one comparison document. Give a clear finish line and check the result.

How to write instructions Claude follows

The quality of the output tracks the quality of the brief. Five short parts cover almost every business task.

A GOOD BRIEF FOR CLAUDE

Context

  • We run a 40-unit storage and shipping facility.
  • Customers are small online sellers.

Task

  • Draft a reply to the email below about a late delivery.

Constraints

  • Friendly but firm. No refunds promised.
  • Under 120 words. Offer a call.

Example

  • Here is a reply we liked last month: …

Format

  • Subject line, then the email.

Five parts, two minutes to write. It saves the back-and-forth.

The five parts of a brief that gets a usable first draft. The example does more work than any adjective.
  • Context: who you are and who the output is for.
  • Task: one clear job, phrased as an action.
  • Constraints: length, tone, what must not be said.
  • Example: a past piece you liked. This does the most work.
  • Format: exactly what you want back.

Save the briefs that work. After a month, they become the backbone of your AI rollout plan.

What not to hand over

  • Final legal, tax or medical decisions. Use it to prepare questions for a professional.
  • Numbers that go to a client or the tax office without a check.
  • Sensitive personal or customer data on a plan whose data terms you have not read.
  • Anything you could not explain if a customer asked how it was decided.

Bottom line

Claude is most useful in a business as a fast first draft and a patient analyst: writing, summarizing, calculating and building small tools, with a person checking the result. Start with two or three of these workflows, save the briefs that work, and expand from there.
